The Jongo Dito Ribeiro Community consists of jongueiros, formed by a group of people and family members, who reconstitute the manifestation of Jongo in Campinas/SP through the memory of Benedito Ribeiro, of rodas with playing, singing and dancing, with the objective of sharing and continuing this ancestral culture.

Mission

Our mission is to reconstitute the ancestral culture of jongo in the most diverse spaces, for all people of different creeds, ethnicities and ages, prioritizing the communities and groups that operate in the universe of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Goal

Our goal is to rewrite and write the history of jongo in Campinas/SP in a way that allows the cultural manifestation to be expanded and respected in its various forms, using as elements to achieve this result: relaxation, joy, affection, good energy, patience with the individual moment of each one, improvement of self-esteem, change of the individual from the inside out, autonomy and the preservation of our jongo playing, singing and dancing practiced in our community.

History

In Campinas, the Jongo Dito Ribeiro Community was named after the late Benedito Ribeiro, Alessandra Ribeiro’s grandfather. When he arrived in Campinas in the 1930’s from the interior of Minas Gerais, he maintained the tradition of Jongo received from his ancestors by holding parties to the Catholic saints.

Since 2002, the Jongo Dito Ribeiro Community has been establishing itself, carrying out reconstitution, composition and research work with the objective of keeping the flame of this descent alive, bringing this important manifestation of Afro-Brazilian popular culture, an element of resistance and unity to society. The group performs in schools, universities, quilombos, official festivals, and its meetings are held every two weeks at Alessandra Ribeiro’s house and, since 2008, at the Casa de Cultura Fazenda Roseira, run by the Jongueira community in Jardim Roseira in Campinas, which is open to anyone who wants to participate and contribute to the reconstitution of this history.

The Jongo Dito Ribeiro Community brings together people of different ages, social origins, races, professions, and places, and since 2005 has been part of the Jongo/Caxambu Memory Network, where it represents the Afro-Brazilian culture of Campinas and already carries the certificate of cultural heritage of Brazil.
